Ice fishing season is upon us—and by the time you read this, it may already be. You have a fish finder on your boat that is perfect for warm-weather fishing and it would be a shame to have to buy another fish finder just for ice fishing.
But we have good news for you – you can ice fish with a regular fishfinder, however, you will need to make some adjustments to the fishfinder’s settings.
Typically, your fishfinder will be connected to your boat's power supply. Since you won't be taking your boat with you when you go ice fishing, you'll need another power source.
In almost all cases, that power source should be a battery. More specifically, you should opt for lithium batteries, as they tend to hold their charge better in sub-zero temperatures. The caveat is that you'll need to keep the battery warm so it can hold a charge for longer.
It is recommended that you choose a dual-purpose fish finder with ice fishing mode so that it can be used in normal times or cold winters. Only one host is needed. When changing the ice fishing probe during ice fishing, changing the setting to Ice fishing mode is fine.
If you're willing to put in the effort and you already own a fish finder, you can save money by modifying your ice fishing settings by following the tips above.
However, ice fish finders are designed for ice fishing because they are more durable in cold weather. In addition, Ice Fishing does not require any modifications to it, and it can be used after powering on.
